2023 - another good calendar year

[I started the first 2 paragraphs on 31 Dec itself, then restarted on 27 Feb, and publishing today on 28 Feb. If you are wondering what happened in the last 2 months, wait for a post in the Career label]

When I think about the major events of the year in personal life, only two events and two realizations come to my mind.

Event1: Became father on the very first day of the year. When someone asks about my feeling, although nobody has asked until now, I have articulated to say - if you think you are a 'complete' man, you must become a father. Lot of concepts, priorities, definitions of laziness/dirtiness, aspirations, meaning of busy schedule got changed post this event. But there has not been a single day when I don't want to be a father once again. Looking at the people who don't want to become father from various strata of life, I fail to comprehend whether it is financial, emotional, logistical, ideological or lack of knowledge that prompts people for a decision of not becoming a parent. Or is my positivity due to my middle class upbringing? For me, it has been a fulfilling and knowledgeable journey so far, of course, with awesome support from Nina, Maa and in-laws family.

The accompanying events such as, staying overnight in hospital (Critical Care) after many years, several rituals including the biggest one of course annaprasanna on 19 July, the night struggle during initial days of Nichinta and Dorapara with Rodali, the vaccination prog of Government of Assam, discussion about child psychology with Nischal, and of course Moina's delivery and the knowledge sharing on vaccine, doctor, food, behaviour etc.

Nina's coming back to normalcy post delivery both in terms of health and mind continued throughout the year. Her assignment (summer workshop, NKTV, Meri mitti, mera desh, Doordarshan B grade artist, Hudum, starting regular classes at home), the week-long stay at Rajib da's place for her Kalakhetra prog, managing household stuffs in absence of helper, relationship with a strict personality like Maa, handling Rodali - I must salute her. The unforgettable 3-day trip to Uchita for Hudum documentary shooting with one month old Rodali was amazing. Not to forget the frequent sound recording visits to Bapujinagar.

Event2: I became a student again, part time PhD student at IIT Guwahati. This post has all details of the events that led to this decision. Attending and bunking classes, preparing for mid and end semester exam, writing 2 hr and 3 hr exam via pen and paper, listening to the discussion about pressure and professor- I relived my student life to a great extent. Managing the offices on the Mondays where I go to attend class at IIT, boarding the Dhubri bus at around 6-40PM, which makes me take another bus from Paikan, the audit class on history v/s memory, numerical in Pankaj da's subject,  the growth model of Agnirup Sarkar along with the definition of sustainability and happiness, regular Sunday stays at Dada's place - I will never forget. The journey has come with some prices as well - sending Nina and Rodalee to Nichinta whenever I have class test/exam, bearing the nonsense of IIT's admin stuff on the occasion of online feedback deadline missing, audit course dropping, the weekly Guwahati trips- but all are manageable compared to the bigger benefit.

One important comparison that I kept making with batch-mates and particularly after Chanda got into Dibrugarh university- the importance and future prospect of the PhD to me and to others. To fully live this experience, maybe I should spend a stint outside India. Sometimes this thought made me non-enthusiastic about the PhD, but then I refer to the realization 1 as below.

Realization 1: What is important in life, now and in the future? The IIT fraternity, globalization lecture content, the IT company office/lay-off atmosphere, witnessing the Agia life from close etc, made me realize (to an extent) what I want. This is for sure that I don't want to grow in corporate career. My discussion with Astrologer Ashesh ji and DMIT with Pranjal also indicates the same, I think. I am getting convinced that an academic career would do the best for me; PhD is definitely the best thing happening with me now. The second question I am not still sure about my stay inside or outside Assam. Here, Nina has a strong sentiment of not going outside Assam due to her career. The finance angle is important and I know more or less what to do. The last thing I need to figure out - how to do justice to my intellectualism, Oxford-Microsoft-McKinsey-metric result data points to check the last point of happiness of being altruistic or self worth, and ultimately creating a legacy.

Realization 2: Why misunderstanding happens among closest family members? I carefully observed the equations between Dada-bou, Tapan-Moina, Nina-Maa, myself with Maa and Nina. Not writing the reasons I want to conclude here is that this rifts are going to stay. We can try minimizing and controlling at threshold level. The perfect scenario is not possible  as this is real life. And, this is not compromise, rather giving respect to the situation and individual by adjusting. I want to teach these to everyone, specially to our children.

Unique events of the year:

1. The Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada - starting from taking 20-day old Rodali to Fisheries deptt, the carelessness by the department, the pleading request after intervention by Utpal Da, and finally cancellation with next year's commitment. First endeavour to become government beenficiary, a way to get some portion of the tax we keep paying.

2. Househelp search started when Doli ran away on the day of Rodali's birth. With Mridul's help, first brought Subha pehi of Dwarka. Then came Shitola khuri of Rangjuli. Lot of time was spent without any house-help, which was very very difficult, mainly for Nina. Then came Anjana from Nalanga hill in May for one week. Then comes Samina and after the disastrous doctor's report on low blood count, we had to send her back. Here comes Silpa, whose end was tragic as she got caught red-handed stealing lot of stuffs. The part time effort started with Kalpana, the lazy maxi-wearing lady. Khirobala jethi has been a great help. Oushodhi jethi was there for a few days before having big quarrel with Maa. There was a bihari part timer came for less than a week, before I and Mridul could find Subashi jethi who remained with us gracefully until the end of the year. Not to forget Amrita, who stayed with us for 1-2 months, mainly during 1-week Ghy stay period.

3. The platinum jubilee celebration our high school and my involvement in the souvenir, procession, stall management and finally the alumni felicitation- memorable events. I won't forget the chat with Samujjal Bhattacharjya and Tankeswar Rabha as well.

4. The selling of the old car and the purchase of new car were two big events of last year. After much deliberation the decision turns out to be a good one.

6. The sudden request from BSG to become an assessor, and how I missed that opportunity due to sheer stupidity of myself.

Regular sections of year review blog post:

1. People: Welcoming Sumo's second child, Chitrolekha's son, Meeting Rahim Zibran and Zubin Garg via Gopi, Richa (Mousum's wife), Permanent farewell to Xoru mami, Chanakya's maa, Karuna's son; Temporary farewell to Wahid Da, New- Child specialists, PhD batch mates, Geetanjali Bez, Tiplai family people, Jyotish khura of Solmari, Tezpur university faculties; Reconnection- Kanad, Meghna, Mridul (closeness rises), Mubin Da, Anup, Uttam Teron, Pranoy Roy

2. Travel-  Except the regular Guwahati trips, one Delhi office trip and Nina's Uchita trip, the only trip of the last year was the Tamulpur to meet Madat Da.

3. Important Dates: 5 Jan (Rodali's homecoming), 18 Jan (while celebrating anniversary at Nichinta, Himanshu's lay-off at CSoD email came), 31 Jan(first month of daughter), 11 Feb (most overstretched day), 14 March (Vision 2047@IITG), 23 March (Tezpur University), 28 April (dada taking flat), 5 May(new WagonR), 12 May (Rodali learning to palta mara), 21 May (Moina's kapur diya at Agia), 30 May (Jahid da's call), 2 June (unforgettable experience of lifetime), 2 July (Rodalee's uncontrolled crying during Nina's PhD entrance), 24 July (IITG student officially), 30 July (welcoming Om), 19 Sept(first mid sem), 2 Oct (Rodalee crawling), 12 Nov(conversation with Anupam, atithi dhaba), 6 Dec(watching Brindaban theatre), 15 Dec (Saal tree and guests),

4. Health: BP was under control with regular medication, had cold for 1-2 times, some teeth issue, rest all good. Cycling stopped as winter and exam came. Physical activity needs to be started, health checkup is due.

5. Ahha moments: Y-o-Y growth of FSP numbers email sent to leadership, learning basic of Chat-GPT after discussion with Kaku, Dr. Meenaxi Borkotoky donating books for the library, Rajib Da's generosity with his rented apartment.

6. Writing and Reading: The Aspiring women collage for R'dalee is something dear to me. Reading the book- Without the hot air as per suggestion of Karuna Da (first few chapters only), Joychandra khura's autobiography and 1-2 here and there whose name I can't recollect. It is a big low. A2O writing is progressing but with the slowest possible speed. After 1st sem exam got over,  I was determined to complete the second part, but I could not. How can I become more disciplined here?

7. Office work :  Although I tend to think there is no learning from CSoD, I believe this is wrong impression. Every little experience adds to our learning. But of course, the monthly salary has been the biggest incentive to continue with CSoD. WFH is like adding cream on the top.

a) I will remember the last Delhi trip that consists of the lunch with the team at Sutra (Noida) and evening drinks with Swati,  Monu and Sachin.

b) The difficult increment discussion (where I played no role , but Rakesh Hegde)  with Sonal at multiple occasions is something I won't forget. Also the cat fight between Payal and Sonal.

c) Getting the mediclaim for Nina's delivery was a great thing financially. The pluxee wallet is something new.

d) Mukesh has consistently been the pain in the ass; one of the emotionless with juniors and ass-licker with seniors kind of fellow. He made Atul's life worst before firing him over the night.

8. Family:

a) Maa leading the surgery of Khirobala jethi was a remarkable event on the family front.

b) The whole effort with land - the Basundhara 2.0 applications, photo sessions on 3rd May(after Tamulpur trip) and then the rejections, efforts for the Agia college and near graveyard lands, effort to find approach road to Dalok land would be highlights of last year.

c) Dada's transfer to Guwahati was a positive news considering his wrong character related information coming all over from Agia people, inside and outside home.

d) Much effort was put on Maa's new book and superannuation benefit. Both are in progress by EoW, also hampered by her body parts' pain.

e) Spending lot of time with Deuta- shopping for mahekiya, watching football match at Hatigaon, the rubber and the fishery discussion, searching for land to buy, and also when that Manoj guy spoke rudely with Deuta and I intervened via Shahanur.

f) Moina spending her post pregnancy time at Agia, the uncontrollable crying of Bhrgab almost on daily basis was unforgettable.

9. Public event: Child abuse by the celebrity doctor couple, Gaza war,  Human-elephant conflict across Assam, dismantling of Ulfa after the peace accord, the dominating rise of HBS with dictatorship, land grabbing via wife and lot of good things as well.

10. Finance: Positive points were the huge profit via Rubber plantation and starting of the lending business via Mridul. Started receiving house rent profit portion of 5K from Maa every month. I invested significant amount in equity via Sharekhan, direct MF, Coin and Kyte, inspired by Naresh's statement of 1 Cr equity portfolio. Also discovered and experienced the RBI direct and SGB. Details would be in the financial year analysis blogpost.

Longest stay at Home

I was trying to understand/remember the different labels of my blog. What should be an event? I think the subject of today's post definitely qualify for an event.

From the time I left home for studying in Cotton College in the year 2000, staying at home was never a 'permanent' phenomenon. From the perspective of the society and from the self imagination about future, staying at home was never on card. This thought process witnessed a change when I stayed at home for around 15 months post Oxford. I must say that was not a deliberated decision, rather a situation being forced upon my life. I branded that period 'Fulltime volunteering@home'. I learnt, initiated, failed, achieved and missed achieving several things during that period.

Becoming lifetime member of AXX

After that stint, I believe, staying permanently at home (at least in Assam) has been in the thought process after a specific period (still don't know what's that specific period though) of life. Maybe when I will become 50 years old! I don't know.

Things took a turn with the emergence of work from home(WFH) phenomenon during Covid. Joining EdCast and planning of baby together made me taking a deliberated and well thought decision of returning home. In the mid of October2023, I surpassed the duration of post-Oxford stay and this stint marked my longest stay at home. Personally, this is a huge event for me.

Now, I am 95% sure that I would be spending the last parts (maybe post 50 years) of my life shuttling between Guwahati and Agia. Situation is such that if CSoD asks me to relocate out of Assam now, I will make 3-4 attempts before comply with that decision. Since there is still 10 years for me to touch 50, I might still be willing to relocate out of Assam if given a great opportunity.

Let me write some good and 'what more' points of the homestay:

1. If WFH option is there, relocating to tier 2/3 cities is a suggestion financial advisors would give anyway. Financially, this has been a great decision for me.

2. The child birth and initial 1/2 years of the baby needs a support system. This is another wonderful decision for me and Nina w.r.t. Rodalee.

3. Being at home has given me opportunity to prepare for future 'permanent stay' period. For example, the PhD, development of land/real-estate, investment in local opportunities(Rubber) and other avenues, reviving the social circle, construction of rented parts at home etc.

What more:

1. The writing of A2O is completely stopped after the start of PhD.

2. Have been trying to purchase a piece of land for commercial purpose, but it is not happening somehow.

3. The decisions/preparations attached with 'preparation for future' is not completed yet.

For future:

1. I have to decide an amount which I would need every month to sustain myself(with family, aspirations, comfort etc) in Assam. Considering my current CTC, it is no brainer that settling in Assam would invite pay cut. I believe with my skill and ability I can keep on accumulating wealth provided I am flexible with location. Hence, this decision of staying back in Assam compromising pay cheque is not easy. But there is no running away from this now or at most before I turn 50.

2. Do I see academic institutions as my potential employer in future? Is this new found interest looking at some of the IIT professors? Remember how I hated academia at one point of my life! How should I compare between instt such as IIT where I need to start from Asst professor level v/s private universities such as USTM? What about consultancy- how should I compare between a job with Big 4(say) v/s Government deptt contractual roles? Job- until when? why?

3. Nina's career is another big decision point. Her engagement increases while in Assam. But is there need of permanency in her engagement? Her efforts are not yielding expected output. From her side staying in Guwahati with weekends being in Agia makes the most sense.

4. Education of Rodalee, the planning of second child, health situations of Maa, parent-in-laws are also factors impacting hugely in future. These are biggest events of human life and I have to be mindful.

5. Sometimes I think, a few drastic events will play huge role in my decision to stay even if I can't calculate an amount as mentioned in point#1. If I can publish A2O, a new direction (of work, career, personality) will emerge. Otherwise, the status-quo will continue with dependency on CSoD. If IITG starts a school of Public Policy, maybe another direction will emerge. If I meet the chancellor of USTM or HBS or Gaurav Gogoi (if Congress comes back), maybe another direction will emerge. On a different note, if I can make the Dudhnoi land ready for commercial purpose, another direction might come. I don't know to be honest, just my thought as on today.

6. Along with all the thoughts above, there is the constant fear or question that bothers me. Have I compromised with my career? I could have become Arvind Pangaria or Karl Mehta or Nikhil Kamath (do I want to become like Nishchae, Alvaro- No, Aaron- maybe), but I did not even tried. The mismatch between my education, passion and skill is a big big concern. The vacuum of intellectual circle in Agia, Guwahati - has it contributed to downgrading my own ambition? Am I the typical 'kharkhua' who can't sustain outside Assam? Am I becoming the typical family man? Is my life graph, which was going exponentially upwards, has reached a steady state? Is there wrong with my overall thought process? But, I am happy at home now. Am I likely to be happier if I can become like Satya Nadella or Amartya Sen? I doubt, but maybe yes, I have never been in their circles. Will I leave more legacy if I become like them? Definitely yes.

Big decision/action of recent time - PhD | D Phil

Currently I am a PhD student of the Centre for Environment at the Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati. It's part time, but still, isn't this wow? surprise ! surprise !

Let me take the readers back to the last post on this topic published in Aug 2016. In that post, after much deliberations, I ruled out applying for fulltime PhD in outside India universities. Part time PhD in any Indian universities is something I wanted to revisit later.

For An Autobiography: Time for a full time PhD from a reputed university abroad ?

I remember the discussion with Utpal Nath Da, visit to IIT Delhi and the different thoughts that I penned in the blogpost. After joining NSDC, I didn't put much thought on PhD. One important reason being the cost, rather the loss of not earning at this crucial period of my career. Also, the life of an academician never attracted me.

The IITG visit: Things changed slowly when I visited IITG for the Vision-2047 exercise on 14-15 March 2023. I was there in the guest house for 2 nights and spoke at the workshop on the topic of Skill and Education. I had the opportunity to speak to a number of people (including the IITG director) to propagate my idea of initiating public policy dialogue in NE India. Karuna Da asked a very pertinent question- even if I IITG starts a policy school, how would they include zing without a PhD? Any academic institute needs a PhD degree, and in NE India, academic institutions can only push for an infrastructure & logistics needed for a policy school. He is right!

From the IITG guest house, I emailed Mr. Hoque, the chancellor of USTM, following up my conversation while being an Oxford student. He was nice enough to reply, but I have not been able to meet him physically until now.

Karuna Da kept pushing and reminding to apply for the part time PhD at IITG since that meeting. I also started thinking the need for PhD from a different lens. This is not to win noble prize, or research at something which is not letting me sleep, rather fulfil an obligation so that an alternate route emerges leading me towards a different career eventually. Life after 50 years should be different than the life I am currently living- I am sure of this. If something can be done with minimum effort, why not? Astrologer said I am at the peak of my life's position; let's try something challenging as God will help (I wish!). Thus, a decision has been made.

At the interview hall

Application process: Making a decision is difficult, but continuing the subsequent steps with that decision is even more difficult. Devils lie in details always.

The online application process was smooth. Per suggestion from Karuna Da, I applied for three departments- Environment, Energy and School of business, paying INR 300/- each. I had to work on getting 2 things- NOC from employer and the OBC certificate. The second one as received as part of Basundhara application. For NOC, I just thought of Mukesh and decided not to write to HR directly. Atul was nice enough to write desired sentences over the email and I submitted the same as NOC. I did another thing- I requested HR to give me an experience certificate in the letter head. I submitted these two letters. However, the NOC in the format of IITG was never submitted. I was scared of this 'loophole', apprehensive of a probable cancellation, until the first class at IITG gets over.

I was shortlisted for interview from all the 3 departments. The interview for the Centre for Environment (headed by Utpal Da), which was also our (Karuna Da and mine) first choice, held on 18 May, the first of the three. It was weird feeling for me sitting and waiting in the interview hall among the 'kids' of mid to late twenties. One of the interviewers commented being a CS graduate and Digital professional, I should try for other department, not environment. Overall, it went good, and I decided not to appear in the interviews of the other two departments. Karuna da also confirmed my name is in the recommendation list, of course, the final list to be put up by academic department will be considered final.

2 June- the memorable day: I got a telephonic call on 1 June morning hours from IITG Academic section asking me to submit OBC-NCL certificate as I have been shown selected for PhD under that category from the centre for environment. I told I am not NCL, and need to be considered under general. I didn't think even twice after cutting the call. By evening, Karuna Da called with Utpal Da in line. They informed that the selection categories are fixed and can't be altered. I should have applied as general if I don't have NCL certificate. I told there was no field in the application form to indicate only OBC. By evening I got an email from the centre for environment that if I don't submit OBC-NCL by 3 June (i.e. next day), my selection will be cancelled.

I was stunned! angry at my own foolishness! Karuna Da was helpless!

The condition for NCL is that your parents' income should be less than 8 Lakh per year. Utpal Da emphasized it is parents' income, not the applicant's. Unsure, still, I calculated Maa's income. With the increase in DA, if I consider Maa's last one year salary it exceeds 8 Lakh by a few bucks. But it is just under 8 Lakh if I consider last FY. Should I try?

I will remember 2 June in my life, so as the DC office workers, officials, the mondol in particular, and maybe IITG admission people. People told it is a record to get OBC-NCL in one day. Nobody has ever got that. I won't forget the support provided by Bhaiti Da and Manik until the time I would be in PhD business. Maybe I should write a separate post only for the events of this day!!

On admission day, infront of Umiam hostel

I sent the NCL certificate to IIG email-iD at 8 PM, after the office hours. I followed up in the later days whether academic section has indeed received the certificate. Apart from Karuna Da, Dhruba Da and Dada also helped.

Admission day: 24 July is the admission day at IITG. From 2 June until today, I was busy with Rodali's annaprasanna. The fee payment was done at the online portal (with hostel fee included) securing the seat at IITG. Prior to the admission day, Maa accompanied me to Guwahati as Moina's delivery date was due. She accompanied me to IITG on admission day along with BD and Junma.

I was allotted Umiam hostel. I did visit the hostel, but could not convince myself to go back to small room- common latrine mode again. I was afraid of the NOC thing, but things went smoothly. Had lunch at Manas hostel mess.

The next day witnessed the orientation session at the Bhupen Hazarika auditorium. New processes, ID card, new SAC rules, hostel menu, email ID, portal link, app, new circle, new course, library, computer centre, admin people, professors- its a whole new world. I wish I could devote my 100% to enjoy this 'newness'. I wish this would have happened while I was unmarried. I wish this would have started while I was killing time post Oxford. I wish many things.... but der aaye durusth aaye!

First class on 39th birthday: As per IITG PhD system, I have to finish coursework of total 24 credit points (every lecture class carrying 6 credits) within next 2 semesters. I tried whether online NPTEL/SAYAM courses contributes to the same; learnt that IITG senate is yet to approve such courses. I decided to take two courses in this sem and two in next sem. One course on renewable energy system by Pankaj Da and another on globalization and sustainable development by one young fellow called Agnirup Sarkar. I discussed with both of them about my attendance issues and requested assistance.

In between, I became Mama on 30 July (planned date was 1 Aug). I was in Ghy with Nina for a NKTv recording and to attend first class at IITG on my birthday. We were able to attend the birth moment at KGMT.

It was so amazing to be back to the classroom after a decade. The first class was at 9 AM class and then again at 5 PM. I can immediately spot the difference in the way of teaching in Oxford vs IIT. At times, I want to become a student completely and delve deeper. Then I tell myself, "no need, just have the concept to secure minimum CPA". But if you ask me how much I am worried about assignment, project work, mid and end semester exam. Oh, a lot! How I can pull this courses amidst Rodali, CSoD and other stuff- let's see and seek God's blessings.

I am grateful to: Karuna Da, Atul Singh, Bhaiti Da, Manik, Utpal Da, Dhruba Da, Pankaj Da, Sutradhar Mondol, family members (Dada, Nina, Maa), Hrishikesh Da just to name a few.

Way forward: In the short term, I am only focusing on completing the coursework. Karuna Da kept pushing some stuffs, but I am not able to manage time. I just hope FSP project gets extended by a year and my WFH continues until I complete the next semester. In between, if Nina can pulls something which requires me to relocate to Guwahati, even better. Thought of applying for married hostel, Nina is not interested. I hope Rodali will have a smooth sailing and additional attention is not needed for next one year.

New identity
In the long term, I am not sure. Sometime I think of taking a break or even resigning and focus on PhD by some exchange programme with other university abroad. If IITG open policy schools, and if they are ok recruiting me at min Associate Professor level, I would be happy to apply. Sometimes I think I might not be able to complete the PhD at all. At other times, I think of collaborating with Govt departments and do an excellent job in the PhD work. Hope I would be able to complete this before I turn 45. I may go to academia post I turn 50- I also think that way sometimes now-a-days. Summary, I have kept all options open in the long term.

Most eventful Birthday of recent years

My 39th birthday witnessed the most eventful birth day of recent years.

The day started with the prolonged happiness of becoming a mama. Moina and Tapan decided 1 Aug as the delivery date, in spite of my suggestion of 31 July. However, God has different plan. On 30 July, I accompanied Nina and Rodali who were going for a recording at NKTv. On the way, Maa informed Moina is facing pain and has been hospitalized. I left the studio and reached KGMT nursing home a few minutes before Moina was transferred to the OT. With God's grace she delivered a baby boy of around 3.8 Kg at around 1-50 PM on 30 July. I stayed at Dada's place since the next day had other plans.

The first task of the birthday is to attend PhD coursework class. Happy to be sitting on class after 10 years. As part of mandate of IIT PhD, I need to acquire 24 credit points i.e. 4 lecture subjects within the next one year. In this semester I have taken two - Renewable Energy System (EN661) by Pankaj Da and Globalization and Sustainable Development (HS609) by Dr. Agnirup Sarkar. It was a different feeling to attend 9 AM class with kids of energy/mechanical engg background on my 39th birthday trying to recollect laws of thermodynamics.

The second experience is the ferry ride to the Guwahati city. I need to visit Pranjal (Goenka Hospital, Bharalumukh) and Moina before reaching the IIT campus again to take 5 PM class of HS609. Driving Dada's car through Maligaon traffic would be a nightmare. Finally, I decided to try ferry ride from Majgaon ghat and that turned out to be an awesome decision.

Met Pranjal and Pinky just before Pinky was taken to OT. Happy but tense faces! By afternoon, I got the news of they becoming parents of another baby boy. I would always remember Pranjal's dialogue - both Mahatma Gandhi and Lal Bahadur Shastri share 2 October as birthdate. Shastri's occasion remains lesser known as Gandhi completely dominates the day. Who will become Gandhi and who will become Shastri for 31 July- Pranjal's apt question!

At KGMT, I got to see my bhagin. The relationship with mama has been special always. Now, Moina giving birth to a bhagin for me,Wow! In the business of life, we fail to appreciate these beautiful moments. I have no doubt in my mind that these moments would never come back.

The return journey from KGMT to IIT is via Uber, ferry, bike lift with a stoppage at JB's to buy a chips pkt that Nina told. By this time, I decided some portion of the birthday must be celebrated with wifey as well i.e. return to Agia on the same day.

The second lecture by Mr. Sarkar was boring, unstructured, unprepared, but it contained many concepts that I already know (unlike laws of thermodynamics), hence I enjoyed. I hope I would be able to pull through both the courses. May God Bless me on my birthday!

Although I planned to return to home via bus, luckily, Majani bai and Bhini were also returning after dropping Dhunu for her college life. I accompanied them from Dharapur- good chat, good food and reached home at 9-50 PM.

At bed, I met my wife, completely overburdened by the household chores. I told her, on the day of special occasions, one needs to rise above her/his personal issues and needs to live the moments only for the dear ones. This is how relationships gets stronger. Then she hugged me and my 39th birthday came to an end.

Thank you God. I think you have kept a good place for me, and I will try my best not to disappoint you.

What astrologers are saying for future

Dear Zing,
Last Monday Shri Bhakta Dev Sharma, the astrologer came to share the 'KUSHTI' of R'dali. He made some important observations about R'dali, you and your wife. You must be worry about a few facts as you plan for future.

About Rodali,
Rahu and Ketu are not good for her. The consequences are skin disease, injury, anger, cough etc. No 'groho' is 'tungot' for her. However, until 11 years of age she will be in 'sukra' dosha and things would be fine. After that 'chandra' dosha will start which signifies extrovert kind of personality with miscellaneous thoughts, in Assamese 'chanchal'. But her study, beauty, performance art skills (gondhorbo bidya) will be excellent. She will be doing love marriage, maybe after 25 years of age. She has 'tripap' at the ages of 10, 16, 28 and 34. Overall, there is nothing much to worry about.

The biggest worry,
Given by Deepak Sharma in Aug 2010
is about your wife. I was appalled to know Nina has been under 'tripap' for last 10 month, will come out of this chakra, post her birthday. She gave birth during this period. Had I known this earlier, I would have got scared like hell during her delivery time.  Even after coming out, Nina's future does not look good until she turns 38. She might be subjected to financial fraud, the astrologer warned multiple times. The moot point is, this is another lonely battle for you in terms of finances. Nina will surely contribute to your life in all other ways, but except, maybe, finances. Accept the fact, be happy and move ahead. Check a good health policy for her.

For you Zing,
you are in the superb period of your human life with Shani devta 'tungot' since your birth. Anything you touch should turn into gold in this age. It seems 'chandra' has a presence in my life, and hence I think a lot. I kept asking the same question- things are fine in general. How could 'extra-ordinary good' will happen to Zing? I think this is a question beyond the syllabus of the 'gonok'.

Long pending decision (no more aspiration) to replace the old WagonR

Can't forget the beautiful memories

The WagonR which was bought 2 days before Dada's marriage, is slated to expire its 15 year registration period on June end 2023. The real attempt to sale the vehicle was started in Nov-Dec last year, and the best offer was 1.2 Lakh. Since I was the only financer, I paused that activity to welcome R'dali. The next round of serious attempt started from February onwards. Since no good offer was received for direct selling, I decided to go for exchange, and got quote from Poddar, Bimal and Bharti Motors. Bimal provided the best deal @95K and I booked the car, which was supposed to get delivered in May first week. I expected the most from Poddar as Abhijit (Jiten Sir's son-in-law) was there, but, got pathetic response.

In the meantime, Indrajit Nath (who helped us purchase the existing Wagon R) of Bharti showroom got in touch with Deuta and offered 1L. I was still reluctant to shift from Bimal; but, Bimal guys informed me on 4 May'23 that they can't provide 95K now. I didn't waste even an hour to book with Bharti Motors on the same day and slated a delivery on the 5th.

I was reflecting how crazy I were to have a car as a teenager. I saved every little penny to buy a car. I don't how and when that craziness totally disappeared. Although I put some money as down payment in the old WagonR, the new one is the first car in my name. Even I was reluctant yesterday to put my name. With time, I have become a totally different animal, don't know good or bad.

All rented families welcoming the car with Maa

Decision Points before buying this car/model:

1) Money is limited and I am the only financer. For old car exchange, the company has to be Maruti.

2) The purpose of this car is to be located at Agia. I don't want a scene like Digbijoy where he drives an  Innova in B'lore and family members travel in public transport at home. In all possibility, I need to buy another car as soon as I need to relocate out of Agia. I am expecting another need to invest in another liability very soon.

3) A tall car is needed for Maa, at least because of her vomiting tendency. She is comfortable in WagonR. The other Maruti models I explored were Breeza and S-presso, but rejected later.

4) In WagonR, I chose for VXI, as this model has the basic stuff such as power window, AC and sound system, and more fuel efficient with 1000 cc engine. The higher ZXI+ model is 1200 cc, and I didn't fine any worthy things to invest 1 Lakh more considering the point#2 above.

5) The red color is chosen to tell people that old WagonR has been replaced with the new (kidding :)). To the Agia public, I don't want to induce change. Of course, I would have thought differently, if my close circle resides in the same place and I am part of all their car specific conversation. Not being put under peer or social pressure has helped taken a thoughtful decision.

Sudden meeting with Samaguri neighbour

Points to remember in future:

1) The Bonus part is extra and should not be associated with accessories or exchange value

2) The 5-year extended warranty is not much needed and can be waived-off. Anything and everything they are pushing can be opted out. The insurance, which is 1 yr first party and 3 yr third party, can be taken from the dealer while buying.

3) The price of Maruti genuine accessories is on the higher side.

4) The naked price will be same at all dealers. Some might quote the naked price including some features (eg- 5 year warranty). The negotiation happens on the other few items, but the overall impact is not that huge.

5) Total money I spent from pocket: INR 5,50,152/-

The last financial year (FY 2022-23)

Analysis of the inflow and outflow of last FY:

1) In Inflow,  (a) the noteworthy mention is the share of 'Loan Repay', which is 33.1%. For a person completely dependent on Salary, this is a good sign. (b) There are lot of entries in 'Other' category, which is prompting me to change the categories for next year. (c) The amount I received via Mediclaim (INR 82413/-) for Miss AA Devi is something new for me and thankful to CSoD. (d) The earning from Market is still below 1%, and its a shame.(e) the start of rental income is a huge thumbs-up. (f) the interest from PPF stood at around INR 72K, which 6K per month.

2) In Outflow, (a) the reduction in Fixed Asset is a great relief, (b) The transport expenses saw a jump after I relocated, (c) the loss of money under Travel for the UK tickets is such a shame, (d) the pending money for buying land was cleared, (e) I paid 7.14 Lakh in taxes to government, (f) Food expenses are still below 2% and that's not a good sign, (g) the rubber sampling experiment was worth trying, (h) opening the Sukanya Samridhi account for R'dali is an event I longed for, (i) the 2.5 Lakh investment in house construction was worth considering the probable return in future although it might take more than 4 years.

How I fared against what I aimed at the start of this FY:

1) Regular income from immoveable property is still a distant dream. The search for land near Urpad stopped after I found the land near graveyard is in the name of Deuta, and applied in Basundhara.

2) Still I don't have any policy on equity- when to sell, what to buy etc.

3) Haven't been able to explore 80D and the current health policy. Shame on me!

Plan for next FY:

1) In the excel file:

    i) Making some change in Outflow tracking. Letting go Travel and Nina, and included a new category for Miss AA Devi. Travel will be merged with either personal or recreation. Nina will come in Donation or with context.

ii) In Inflow, bank interests- Savings and FD will be merged. Dividend and amount from selling market will be one column as I hardly sell stocks. With Others, will try to bring a relevant category

iii) The Sharekhan settlement money to be subtracted from the expense sheet, although in the Sharekhan Trading sheet, it may remain as it is.

iv) Since Homeloan deduction is compensated by the contribution by Dada and Maa, I should only mention INR 17/- in the Outflow section. This is not tracked for the amount, but for the activity.

2) Action items:

    i) Get clarification of the EPF and VPF thingies. Currently there are 2 accounts under one UAN. What's the significance of VPF?

ii) Focus on health policy - know more, open if necessary.

iii) Explore ULIP, maybe one will be interesting.

iv) No opening of FD in Zing's accounts.

3) Keep the focus on the immovable properties and agriculture projects.
